An Overview of Convention: Parishes in Christ's Service

Parishes in Christ’s Service is not only the theme of the 229th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, it’s the focus of the day-long event. Set at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the November 19 Convention will be highlighted by illustrations and examples of what it means to be Parishes in Christ’s Service.

Convention is also one of the important events in the life of the diocese. The Diocesan Convention is the annual gathering and business meeting of the clergy and lay representatives of the 200+ churches in the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Decisions are made concerning where funding is to be allocated for the next year, who will be elected to key diocesan committees and councils, and which resolutions will be supported.

Among the highlights will be the address by Bishop Mark Sisk, slated for the morning. There will be a myriad of topics and reports, including the status of the Diocesan Credit Union, Episcopal Charities, Congregational Support, DIT and the Cathedral. Additionally, the Rev. Canon Pat Mitchell, the new Canon for Christian Formation, will be presenting a report.

Registration opens at 8 am in the narthex of the Cathedral.

Elections
The Convention delegates will be electing: one clergy and one lay person to Standing Committee for a four-year term, and one layperson to fill an unexpired term; six (clergy or lay) to Diocesan Council; three (clergy or lay) to Diocesan Trustees; four clergy and four lay Alternate Deputies to General Convention and Provincial Synod; one lay and one clergy to the Committee to Elect a Bishop; and will nominate three clergy and seven lay persons to Cathedral Trustees. Chaplain
Bishop Sisk has named the Rev. Don Waring of Grace, Manhattan, to serve as Chaplain for the Convention.

Resolutions
Convention will be asked to discuss and act upon a series of resolutions. Among the topics are:
• Proposed Resolution On Promoting A Culture Of Non-Violence (submitted by the Social Concerns Commission)
• Call For The Study Of The History Of Slavery In The Episcopal Church (submitted by the Reparations Task Force)

Canons
This year, the Canons Committee is not submitting any canons for review. However, Convention will be asked to review a Canon forwarded from the National Church.

Exhibitors
Exhibitors will be located in the narthex of the Cathedral. The variety of the exhibitors offers lots to learn, view, discuss, purchase, and ponder. Child Care

Disabilities Notices
Signers will provide translation into American Sign Language in the front of the Cathedral. As in the last two years, large screen presentations by C2 Inc. will display text simultaneous to live speech, dialogue or performance.

Awards and Presentations
As always, any awards or presentations made at the Convention won’t be announced until Convention!

Pre-Convention Caucuses
There will be three Pre-Convention Caucuses, one in each of the areas of the diocese. All will include an overview of the Convention’s business and an opportunity to meet the candidates for the various offices.

•November 12 at Zion Dobbs Ferry, 10am

Convention Planning Committee
The Convention Planning Committee is led by James A. Forde, Sr., Secretary of Convention. Members include: the Rev. Richard Major, St. Mary’s Staten Island; Jeanette Matthews, Grace, Nyack; the Rev. Wayne Nicholson, St. Paul’s, Chester; Marsha Ra, St. Savior at the Cathedral;  the Rev. F. Monroe (Buddy) Stallings, Ascension, Staten Island; the Rev. Burtner Ulrich, St. John Getty Square, Yonkers, and Canons Committee Chair; George J. Wade, Chancellor.

Gerald Keucher, Controller and Sara Saavedra, who will replace Fredenburgh as Assistant Secretary after the Convention.

Parroquias al Servicio de Cristo no solo es el tema de la 229 Convención de la Diócesis Episcopal de Nueva York, es el punto central del evento de un día de duración. Organizada en la Iglesia Catedral de San Juan el Divino, la Convención del 19 de noviembre estará resaltada con ilustraciones y ejemplos sobre lo que significa ser Parroquias al Servicio de Cristo.

La Convención es también, uno de los eventos importantes en la vida de la diócesis. La Convención Diocesana es el encuentro anual y la reunión de negocios de los representantes del clero y de los laicos, de más de 200 iglesias de la Diócesis Episcopal de Nueva York. Se toman decisiones tales como, asignaciones presupuestales para el próximo año, quienes serán elegidos para los comités y consejos diocesanos claves y cuales resoluciones se apoyaran.
Entre los principales puntos de interés estará el discurso del Obispo Mark Sisk, programado para la mañana. Elecciones
Los delegados a la convención elegirán para el Comité Permanente, un clérigo y un laico para un período de cuatro años y un laico para desempeñar un período inconcluso; seis (clérigos o laicos) para el Consejo Diocesano; tres (clérigos o laicos) para la Junta Diocesana; cuatro clérigos y cuatro laicos Directores Suplentes para la Convención General y el Sínodo Provincial; un laico y un clérigo para el Comité Elector de un Obispo; y elegirán tres clérigos y siete laicos para la Junta de la Catedral. Capellán
El Obispo Sisk ha nombrado al Rev. Don Waring de Grace, Manhattan, como el Capellán de la Convención.

Resoluciones
Se le pedirá a la Convención discutir y actuar sobre una serie de resoluciones. Algunos de los temas son:
Resolución propuesta sobre Promoción de una Cultura de No-Violencia (presentada por la Comisión de Asuntos Sociales.
Solicitar el Estudio de la Historia de la Esclavitud en la Iglesia Episcopal (presentada por el Grupo Operativo de Desagravios (Reparations Task Force).

Canones
Este año el Comité de Canones no ha presentado ningún canon para revisión.  Sin embargo, se le pedirá a la Convención la revisión de un canon remitido por la Iglesia Nacional.

Expositores
Los expositores estarán localizados en el vestíbulo de la Catedral. La diversidad de los expositores ofrece mucho para aprender, ver, discutir, comprar y considerar. Guardería

Avisos para Discapacitados
Se proveerá interpretación en Lenguaje de Signos Americano. Como en los dos últimos años, una pantalla gigante de C2 Inc., mostrará simultáneamente el texto del discurso, diálogo o presentación.

Galardones y Reconocimientos
Como de costumbre, los galardones o reconocimientos hechos durante la Convención, ¡no serán anunciados hasta la Convención!

Asambleas Pre-Convención
Se tendrán tres Asambleas Pre-Convención, una en cada una de las áreas de la diócesis. Todas incluirán una idea general de los asuntos de la Convención y una oportunidad para conocer los candidatos para las diferentes posiciones.
• Octubre 15 en Desarrollando la Iglesia (Doing Church), Iglesia Catedral de St. Juan el Divino
• Octubre 29 en St. Jorge, Newburgh, 10 a.m.
• Noviembre 12 en Zion Dobb's Ferry, 10 a.m.
